Minutes of September 10, 2019Wilmington Philatelic Society
The meeting was called to order at 7:06 pm by President John Daniels. Thirteen members and one visitor were present. John welcomed everyone to the meeting.President’s Remarks: Everyone was reminded to sign the attendance sheet and wear their name badges. A number of items will be placed on the club “Free” table but not until after Helen’s presentation. The October 8, 2019 meeting will be held at the church and will be the last meeting held at Pearsall.Floor Remarks: Richard Porcelli commented on the American Philatelist article about the stamp hobby is not dying but is evolving. This started a lively discussion about the changing nature of the stamp collecting hobby and philatelic marketplace. Ebay is now the market place for most collectors and is setting the prices for most philatelic sales. The public now uses the web and social media as their main means of conducting business, communication, and entertainment. Our club needs to accept this change and broaden our approach to stamp collecting and public outreach. Helen’s presentation will address this very subject.Vice President Report: We need volunteers to make presentations at upcoming meetings. Donation for Stamps for the Wounded are being accepted. The next shipment will be in November.Secretary Report: No new contacts or membership applications. Current membership remains 36.Treasurer Report: Tim gave a detailed report on the past month’s income and expenditures. Both collections are US stamps and First Day Covers. See John for contact information. The club’s annual Christmas Social at Hieronymus Seafood is rapidly approaching Details will be available soon. The October meeting is an “Open” meeting. Please bring philatelic items to share with the club. Jimmy Jordan will hold a Stamp Soaking Clinic for those who are interested.Jimmy reported on the upcoming USPS new stamp issues and other philatelic news. He also shared a personal experience with bank fraud. Someone was able to print completely bogus checks using Jimmy’s bank routing number and account number and then make a purchase. Jimmy discovered the fraud immediately and, with the help of his bank, was able to close the old account and open a new one. Although he suffered no financial loss the aggravation of the modern electronic banking system is almost overwhelming. It takes one to two pay cycles (i.e. months) for changes to direct deposits and automatic drafts to become effective. Until the changeover to the new account is complete, Jimmy has to monitor his accounts and make daily authorization (or not) phone calls to the bank.  All are reminded to review your financial accounts daily!    The next meeting is Tuesday October 8, 2019 at the church. This will be an “Open” meeting along with Jimmy’s stamp soaking clinic.Meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm.Helen Rittersporn presented the program “My 10 Favorite Anchored Scraps.com Blog Posts on Stamp Collecting”.
